The first thing Luan and I made while preparing for our trip to Japan was a dedicated travel webpage: a day-by-day itinerary of where to go and what to do. The travel records now taking shape in Day trace back to that early itinerary.

Planning conversations mix several questions: where to go, how to reach the next place, and where to eat. Luan helped me review the options, and I arranged our choices by day and travel sequence. Even an appealing place raises new questions once it is fitted into a day — distance from the stops before and after, travel time, room to eat or rest — so choosing destinations and shaping the day went hand in hand. The image above is a reconstruction with fictional places, not an excerpt of the original file.

I gathered the resulting plan on the webpage, so the itinerary always had one place to return to, however long the conversation grew. It was centered on the choices that made it into our trip rather than giving every new piece of research equal weight. Different people look for different things in a family itinerary: I check order and timing, while the family sees where we are going that day.

We kept revising the itinerary during the trip. Once transport was confirmed, we reviewed the expected arrival and the route that followed, and decisions made on the ground became part of the plan. The original page was the starting point for those changes, and the same work — bringing plans together, tracking changes, finding records later — carried on into Day.
